Since
November 2002 I have delivered sessions in lobbying and advocacy skills for activists
from the UK Breast Cancer Coalition (now Breakthrough Breast Cancer Campaigns
and Advocacy Network).
Founded by women with personal experience of breast cancer, the Network brings
together individuals, regional groups and national organisations to campaign for
improvements in access to breast cancer services. I
have planned and run training sessions in 'lobbying your MP' and 'advanced lobbying'
to support activists from the network to become informed patient advocates in
their own right with the aim of increasing of patients in decisions regarding
all breast cancer issues. The
training sessions use role play, group discussion and case studies focused around
the current priorities of campaigners to build skills and confidence in the participant.
